Book Bag

This is a simple and quick little book bag to make. You could use a wool felt sheet or a tightly wet felted piece of wool. I used some of my leaf wool, so it was soaked in a fabric stiffener and water bath, wrung out, dried and ironed. It made it a little easier to work with as the wool had a bit of stiffness and the edges didn’t fray.

I needle felted a bit of sari silk waste on the flap, for some mossy detail. You could also embroider it.

Sew all the way down, around the curve and up the other side.

Attach the other side in the same way.

Cut out a rectangle the width you want and 2.5x the length you want the finished bag. This one is 1” x 2.5”. I cut it leaving so the the top edge (that will be the flap) was the finished raw edge of the wool. For the strap, cut out a piece like the one above, long enough to go around your faeries torso and the sides of the bag (this one ended up being a little short because I didn’t measure! So I gently stretched it out, which I was able to do without breaking it because of the fabric stiffener).

Trimmed the underside after felting.

Check where the side/strap will go by folding the bag up as it will be when finished, lay the side/strap piece down with the bottom curve against the folded curve of the bag, hold in place with a pin (or hold between thumb and finger). Starting at the side front corner of the bag (not the flap side) sew a tiny blanket stitch down.

Stop in line with the other side (don’t sew the flap to the strap), and tie off.

I gently pulled the strap to stretch a little and then rolled between thumb and finger to round it a little.
